Hiding out among the fishermen at Lund

Today's photo is from Lund Harbor, where we spent last night. Lund has three docks un its small public marina. Two are connected to shore--one reserved for fishing boats and the oyhet for pleasure boats. A third set if docks forms a breakwater for the marina, and from those you have to row into shore. We have also been assigned to a spot on the breakwater docks--a little inconvenient. This time we got a shore dock spot, but on the fishing boat dock. So you see us here tucked in amongst the fishing boats.

We stopped in Lund to spend the evening with Walter and Barbara Chapman, former clients of Phil's. Walter was a pediatrician in Seattle, now retired, and now he and Barbara spend much of their time in a beautiful home on the water just south of Lund. we try to stop here each time we come north. This time we were very lucky because they had plans to go to a famous local restaurant on Okeover inlet, the Laughing Oyster. It has been there a long time and had a well deserved excellent reputation. We enjoyed a wonderful seafood dinner along with Walter and Barbara, and their daughter Kit and her husband Don.

Today we got yet another sail in. So far we have set a record for us, with half of our passages under sail. we had a nice southeast wind and a tide with us, so enjoyed a beautiful sail from Lund up to Gorge Harbor, which is on Cortes island, in the middle of Desolation Sound. we will be dining out again tonight at the restaurant here, which is also quite good. it is also laundry day, and catch up on Internet day.

Tomorrow we move to the octopus islands, in the northern part of Desolation Sound. We are hoping to connect again with our friends the Lashers, on our way to Shoal Bay.

A Really Rare Boat Photo

On the day we crossed the Straits of Georgia, there was wind, and from a direction that we could actually use without dramatically altering our course. So here you have the rarest of the rare photos of Tamarisk, with BOTH genoa and main sail up. The main is reefer, which is why it looks a little droopy here and there--the wind was 15-18 knots, and we we close hauled, so nicely heeled over and had quite a roaring sail.

We have changed our plans in order to see friends of ours in Lund, who will only be there this evening so we rare leaving Pender and moving to Lund tonight. the next day we will move into Desolation Sound, to Gorge Harbor. I should be able to send another post from there.

Under Sail!

Here is a really rare photo--Tamarisk under sail! Yesterday we had a nice southerly as we moved from Ganges to Parker Island, and unfurled the genoa and enjoyed a very pleasant, quiet sail. what a nice treat! today we are anchored in Clam Bay, in the north Gulf Islands. we are going to go out Porlier Pass in the morning and head across to an anchorage in Howe Sound that we haven't been to. Each year we try to find one or two new anchorages to explore. then we will head up to Pender Harbor.

We are spending our last morning off Saltspring Island, visiting with our friends Ralph Clasby and Mary MacArthur. This picture shows them (Mary is on the left and Ralph is standing) with their neighbors Marlene and Archie, along with Phil on the right. Ralph and Mary are the couple we have often stayed with in Vancouver to go to the New Years Eve gala at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. We have also occasionally stayed with Marlene and Archie, when the guest room at the Clasbys was full.

We have had a lovely two days visiting with them, enjoying their company and the great view from the deck of the house they are renting. I will post one more picture of me and Phil in the same spot. We are off to Parker Island today.

In Canada--at Ganges

Just a quick post, sans picture, to let everyone know we cleared customs (by phone, the first time we have done that entering Canada) and are anchored in Ganges Harbor. We will rendezvous today with friends Earl and Kristin Lasher, who are coming here to provision, as. Are doing. We will spend a couple more days here to visit with our friends Ralph and Mary Clasby, and then make our way through the Gulf Islands. All is well, the weather decent (partly cloudy, partly sunny, temperatures in the high 60s and vry low 70s). It feels great to be back on the water!

Idyllic Island Life

Today's picture is from Lopez Island, where we visited yesterday with our friends Mark and Lou Damborg, seen here with Phil. I have returned from grand mothering and am on the boat. Phil and I will head to Canada today to begin our journey north. Mark and Lou took us to this lovely spot overlooking a bay, where someone constructed this novel bench and a little table so people could come sit and enjoy the view. We had our cocktails here yesterday evening, in some of the first nice weather we've had in the last week. There we a few showers last night, and some predicted for today, but after that it looks like we have a week of nice weather. At last!

Here's a photo that catches the contemplative look that Luc gets when he's awake--and a matching look from his dad. Both of them looking out at the world saying....hmmmm, just what is this all about?

Grandma Kae

Here is my first Grandma photo with Luc (aka Lucian Townsend Hutchison). You can see he is sporting an impressive head of hair--just like his Auntie Shana had. Grandma is having a great time helping out Guy and Joahnna, who are a quite sleep deprived because Luc likes to be awake during the night. He is finally learning how to "latch on" so that Joahnna can nurse him, so hopefully that will begin to help them out during the night shift. I will be here until Monday.
